Jeremiah Sabin was born in Ohio and had moved to Auburn, Kansas in 1856, so it is likely that he and Frank had known each other for several years. He is listed at the bottom of this record as being the acting surgeon at Fort Zarah in May, 1865. He had previously served at Fort Riley. By 1870 he was living in Louisville, Kansas, listed on that year's census as a physician and druggist. He resided there until his death in December, 1888 and is buried in the local Louisville cemetery.
